Royal Retainer is an enemy in Hollow Knight. The enemies are creatures that have succumbed into The Infection and has turned them into hostile beings who are determined to kill anyone who crosses their path. Acquiring the Hunter's Journal allows The Knight to acquire additional notes on an encountered and defeated enemy such as bits and pieces of lore, information on how to deal with the enemy, and information on The Hunter.

The most loyal and devout servants of the King.

Simple, weak creatures find strength by forming a hive and obeying a ruler. Such creatures become the arms and teeth and claws of their monarch.

These guys are a great way to refill your soul if you just hit them with the dream nail instead of killing them - especially since they don't attack

      • I think these shiny white monk-like beetles are endearing, especially the chubby egg-shaped ones. I find their voices quite soothing as well. Very interesting how they see the Knight and immediately bow to him... As if they recognize him... I think there’s something to that. Possibly? Perhaps they would bow to all Pale beings, all Vessels? Or... only the Pale King? Judging by their description, only the King... I wonder if they also bowed to the Hollow Knight when he was being raised in the White Palace...
