Bretta is an NPC in Hollow Knight. Bretta is a lonely ground beetle and a hopeless romantic.

Bretta Information

Bretta is a lonely young beetle who, after being rescued and found at the Fungal Wastes by the Knight, will move to her house in Dirtmouth.

Later on, players will learn that she has fallen in love with the Knight and will also find countless materials depicting them, such as paintings, dolls, and even romantic diary entries about them. However, if players choose to save Zote the Mighty twice and then defeat him at the Colosseum of Fools, Zote will move to Ditmouth, where the two will meet. Bretta then grows fond of Zote, changing all her mementos to depict Zote instead of the Knight. Bretta imagines Zote to be a mighty, invincible warrior, who she dreams up as Grey Prince Zote.

The Knight can then access the basement in her house, where a statue of Zote is found. You can use Dream Nail on it to fight and defeat Zote, granting an achievement.

After several fights with the boss, Bretta will become disillusioned with him and leave Dirtmouth.

Location: Bretta Can be found at the Fungal Wastes, southeast of Mantis Village, past the Dashmaster statue and through a platforming room.

Progression: Bretta moves to her house in Dirtmouth, and falls in love with the Knight for saving her. Sometimes she will be found sitting on the bench outside. If you sit next to her, she will blush.

After you defeat Zote the Mighty in the Colosseum of Fools, he goes back to Dirtmouth, and Bretta falls in love with him. A secret room beneath her house will then become accessible, where you can fight a dream battle with her fantasy of Zote, known as Grey Prince Zote. When you defeat Grey Prince Zote, Bretta loses confidence in the real Zote, and eventually she leaves Dirtmouth, never to return.

Combat: Players may not kill Bretta.

Rewards: Finding and speaking to her unlocks her house in Dirtmouth and a Mask Shard, in addition to what might be her diary. Also unlocks Grey Prince Zote as a dream boss, with Essence as a reward.
 

Associated Quests

Bretta (Quest): After you find and rescue her at the Fungal Wastes, she will head back to Dirtmouth and sta in her house. Inside her house, players will find dedications to the Knight, as she has grown fond of him after being rescued.

Endings impact: Choosing to save and defeat Zote the Mighty at the Colosseum of Fools will cause Bretta to show her infatuation to Zote instead of the Knight.

Choosing to save and defeat Zote the Mighty at the Colosseum of Fools will cause Bretta to show her infatuation to Zote instead of the Knight. This unlocks a basement with a statue of Zote in her house. If the Knight hits the statue with the Dream Nail and defeats Grey Prince Zote 4 times, Bretta decides to set out on her own and leaves Hallownest.
