The Radiance is a Boss in Hollow Knight. Bosses are special Enemies that feature their own arena, a large amount of health, and a variety of unique moves and abilities. You will need to perform multiple attacks such as using The Nail and Nail Arts along with the Spells and Abilities in order to defeat them. Some bosses are capable of entering into a state of stagger after landing a number of attacks on them.

As soon as you encounter a boss, its name will appear on the screen, the music will change into a boss battle theme, and usually, paths connecting the arena will close or will be blocked leaving you no choice but to face these devastating and unique foes.

The light, forgotten.

The plague, the infection, the madness that haunts the corpses of Hallownest... the light that screams out from the eyes of this dead Kingdom. What is the source? I suppose mere mortals like myself will never understand.

The Radiance Strategies

Strategy Writeup

For this boss, you'll want to upgrade your Nail to its maximum level as well as obtaining the empowered versions of your Spells and Abilities. Shade Cloak will be your best friend in this battle as you will constantly be dashing through The Radiance's attacks especially when you are caught in a sticky situation, Abyss Shriek is also recommended here in order to deal maximum damage since The Radiance always positions itself above The Knight.

As far as Charms go, having Quick Focus and Quick Slash equipped for this battle will be useful in order to perform your actions at a quicker rate. Pairing it with Grubsong and Thorns of Agony will also help you gain SOUL and deal damage when you get hit, and finally having Shaman Stone paired with Spell Twister can help you increase the overall effectiveness of your Spells.

The Radiance has 5 Phases, its first phase will consist of its common attacks where you'll be fighting it on a wide platform. Phase 2 starts once it spawns spikes on the floor randomly. Phase 3 on the other hand, is the most crucial phase since it will start to execute all of its attacks at once, forcing you to focus on trying to avoid getting hit - this is where the usage of Abyss Shriek or any spells will come in handy. Phase 3 will only end once you've inflicted enough damage.

For Phase 4, you'll be fighting The Radiance in small separated platforms, so try to land your attacks by using ranged spells. Its last phase will only consist of it shooting a beam of light towards The Knight; you'll need to jump on the platforms to reach the top and to strike it with one single blow using The Nail.

Attacks & Counters

Attack Counter
Phase 1
Circular Swords Watch for the swords positioning as it forms around the face of The Radiance then position yourself towards the gap between the swords to avoid getting hit.
Pillar of Light With the help of Mothwing Cloak or Shade Cloak, dash through the pillar to avoid it.
Horizontal Swords Dash through the swords or watch its positioning and use the gaps in between the swords to jump through it.
Orb of Light The only way is to avoid it and try to bait it to land on the surface for it to disperse.
Phase 2
Spiked Floors Look at the floor and stand where it is clear of the spikes. Lights will start to flash on the floor for you to identify where the spikes will emerge.
Burst of Light Watch the beams positioning as it will first release a thin light to identify where it will be giving you time to position yourself before it grows into a larger beam.
Vertical Swords Look at the ceiling to see the positioning of the swords. As it falls down, use the gaps to avoid getting hit.
Phase 3
Endless Barrage Focus on dodging its attacks while dealing ranged attacks since The Radiance will continuously spawn spikes on the ground and call forth horizontal and vertical swords. Use Abyss Shriek or Spells to inflict damage.
Phase 4
The Radiance uses all of its attacks except the spiked floor and vertical swords but the platform for The Knight will turn into smaller portions making it even difficult to maneuver around the arena.
Phase 5
Beam of Light Similar to the burst of light attack, watch out for the first thin beam to identify its position and avoid it before it expands into a larger beam that deals damage.

The Radiance Lore

The Radiance is a higher, primordial being of light, the former leader and self-proclaimed “creator” of the Moth Tribe. It is the enemy of the void. It was worshipped by the bugs of Hallownest who at that time were feral in nature and not sapient, blindly following the Radiance’s alluring light. The Pale King arrived in Hallownest and granted a higher intellect, freewill, and sapience to the creatures of Hallownest, with their freewill allowing them to choose who they wished to lead them instead of blindly following the Radiance. This resulted in all tribes choosing to follow The Pale King over The Radiance.

With the followers of The Pale King growing, The Radiance was almost forgotten by the bugs, and grew furious and vengeful. It decided to appear in the dreams of the bugs to enslave them, which manifested as The Infection. The Pale King resisted and created a plan to stop the Radiance’s reign of terror by sealing it inside a Vessel infused with the void. After his creation in the Abyss, the Hollow Knight was then chosen, raised, trained and grew into a full grown Vessel and eventually sealed The Radiance within himself and was locked in the Temple of the Black Egg.

Due to the impurity that was overlooked and as time passed, The Radiance was able to influence the Hollow Knight which caused him to become Infected himself. His shell to broke open, allowing the Radiance’s energy to seep out and overtake Hallownest once more. This lead to the power of The Radiance to leak where it invaded the minds of the bugs, alongside viciously ravaging and destroying the kingdom to take vengeance.
